What to do with a chain link fence

Landscape design on an existing house with no budget can be a challenge. My 1960′s ranch style home sits on nearly 1/3 of an acre and is surrounded by some not so great chain link fence. Having two dogs I appeciate the praticality of it but from the standpoint of creating a relaxing and beautiful landscape design it was a challenge. Having dogs further complicated things because I couldn’t just plant to hide the fence because my 120 pound doberman would crush young plants. My solution? My dad and I purchased some inexpensive cedar at a local store on sale and created something similar to window boxes. Only instead of hanging outside my windows we attached s hooks and hung them on the top rail of the fence. Now my fence has strategically placed cedar boxes full of beautiful plants and flowers well out of the reach of the dogs feet.
