There are numerous gold coins available on the market. One of the most expensive gold coins ever sold was back in 2002 at a New york auction house. It was a 1933 Double Eagle that sold for 7.59 million US dollars. Many US gold coins that pre-date 1933 will be of immense value for the shear reason in 1933 President Roosevelt passed a bill making the possesion of gold illegal. The President ordered all gold coins to be confiscated and melted down, so the few gold coins that survived this bill have risen in value. In 1977 Congress decided to lift the regulations on the control of gold.
